The Caterham name has always been synonymous with motorsport, and today the Seven remains one of the most successful and popular race cars in the world. It isn't really surprising, as when Colin Chapman conceived the Seven® it was always first and foremost a race car. Even whilst the car was still a prototype in 1957 it competed in the famed Brighton Speed Trials, and by the time 1958 came around it was winning races with Graham Hill at the helm. It was instantly successful and incredibly competitive. Perhaps too competitive. After dominating races across the World, by the 1960s the car was declared "too fast to race" and was subsequently banned from competing in many established race championships.
This ban effectively led to the birth of what Caterham racing is now most famous for – incredibly competitive and closely fought one make racing championships. This has proved very successful, and today Caterham Sevens® are amongst the most raced cars globally, with more than a thousand competitors racing all around the world.
Despite the success of one make Caterham racing, it is still good to occasionally remind both ourselves and everyone else just how effective the Seven® is. So, when the opportunity arises and the "too fast to race" ban is lifted, we jump at the chance to compete. A great example of this is the infamous Nürburgring 24 hour race, which we were allowed to contest in 2002. With all the big name official factory teams lined up on the grid, no one was quite expecting the plucky little British sports car to cause quite such a stir. So, out of over 200 starters, our car finished 11th overall, genuinely mixing with and in many cases beating established "faster" and vastly more expensive machinery from some very big manufacturers with budgets to match. Furthermore, our car won its class by such a huge margin that it was a little bit embarrassing for all the other entrants. We have been banned from taking part in this and any other races since. Seems the big boys are afraid of a little competition...
